Teaching and Giving at Lesley Ellis
As we close out the week and delve further into December, I’ve been reflecting on a simple but powerful reminder from Maya Angelou:
“When you learn, teach; when you get, give.”
In many ways, this captures the heart of our school community. Each day, your children arrive eager to learn, and in turn, they teach us so much – about curiosity, joy, resilience, and what it means to approach the world with openness. Learning is not something we do to children; it’s something we do with them. And as research shows us, teaching others is the most powerful way to learn. When children take on the role of teacher – explaining their thinking, showing a friend how to solve a problem, or demonstrating a skill – they deepen their understanding and build confidence in their own abilities.
This quote also speaks to generosity – not only the kind measured in items donated or hours volunteered, but the generosity of spirit we see in our hallways every day. When children “get” encouragement, kindness, or support, they naturally give it back to their classmates. This week I have observed students sharing materials, ideas, laughter, and problem-solving strategies. They help friends up when they fall (sometimes literally!) and celebrate one another’s successes.
As we continue into this season of gratitude and giving, I want to thank you for all that you pour into this community. Your partnership strengthens our collective work and helps our students thrive as learners, teachers, givers, and doers.
Wishing you warmth, connection, and a wonderful week ahead.
