Head of School
Rhiannon McElwee
Dear Lesley Ellis Community and Friends,
From my very first visit to Lesley Ellis, I felt something extraordinary. The warmth, curiosity, and authenticity of this community were unmistakable, from the bright eyes of students eager to share their ideas, to the faculty and staff who clearly love what they do, to the families who radiate a deep sense of connection and pride. I knew right away that this was a place I would be honored to lead.
Lesley Ellis “walks the walk.” Our mission—where every child is seen, known, and inspired—comes to life every day in classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, and performances. Students are challenged and supported in equal measure. They ask big questions, grapple with complexity, and grow into thoughtful, confident learners who care deeply about the world around them. That combination of intellectual rigor, creativity, and compassion is what makes Lesley Ellis so special.
As I begin my tenure as Head of School, I am filled with gratitude for the strong foundation built by my predecessor, Deanne Benson, and by the talented faculty, staff, and families who make this community thrive. Enrollment is strong, students are flourishing, and the energy on campus is palpable. Together, we’ll continue to nurture that spirit while exploring new ways to strengthen our programs and deepen our shared values.
My goal is to build on the excellence that already defines Lesley Ellis, ensuring that our students continue to experience the joy of discovery, the power of belonging, and the inspiration to make a difference.
On a personal note, my husband, daughter, and I are thrilled to join the Lesley Ellis family and we all thank you for such an accepting and inclusive welcome.
With warmth and excitement for all that lies ahead,
Rhiannon McElwee

Celebrating Our Remarkable Teachers
May 17, 2026
Dear Families,
“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.”
~ Malala Yousafzai
This week we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, and I want to take a moment to honor the extraordinary educators who make Lesley Ellis such a joyful, thoughtful, and deeply human place to learn.
Our faculty bring an incredible depth of experience, care, and commitment to their work:
-
6 teachers have been at LES for 1–3 years
-
12 teachers have been at LES for 3–5 years
-
7 teachers have been at LES for 6–10 years
-
7 teachers have been at LES for 11–19 years
-
3 teachers have devoted more than 20 years of service to LES
Collectively, our 35 teachers bring nearly 290 years of service to LES and more than 475 years of teaching experience to our classrooms each day.
While those numbers are remarkable, what feels even more meaningful is what they represent: relationships, continuity, wisdom, and a deep belief in children. Teacher retention speaks volumes about the health of a school community, and I feel profoundly grateful for a faculty that cares so deeply for your children and remains so committed to our mission and progressive pedagogy.
Every day, I have the privilege of witnessing teachers listening carefully to students’ ideas, designing meaningful learning experiences, nurturing confidence, encouraging productive struggle, and helping children discover not only what they know, but who they are becoming. Their work is intellectually demanding, emotionally complex, and profoundly important.
Schools are built not only on curriculum and buildings, but on people – and we are extraordinarily fortunate to have educators who bring such warmth, creativity, expertise, and dedication to this community.
I hope you will join me this week in celebrating and thanking the remarkable teachers who make LES the special place it is.
With gratitude,
Rhi
