A Program of Schools for Children

Transitional Kindergarten

Learning Looks Like This

Students come together each week to read a Caldecott Book Award story. During one story time, students listen to the teacher read The Little Island by Margaret Wise Brown and Leonard Weisgard. As she reads, the teacher stops and asks the students to make predictions and guides them in understanding new vocabulary.

At one point a child raises her hand to ask what “faith” means when it comes up in the text. The teacher asks if anyone knows and takes some student ideas. Together, the children decide upon a meaning, and the teacher helps sum up what they have said: “Faith means believing in something that you can’t be sure is true.”
